MS Lofoten

MS Lofoten was built at the erstwhile Akers Mekaniske Verksted at Oslo and is presently the oldest vessel serving the Hurtigruten. Launched in 1963 she resumed operation on the Hurtigruten for VDS in March 1964.
Lofoten and her two near sisters, Kong Olav and Nordnorge (scrapped), were built to the same basic design based on Harald Jarl of 1960. Harald Jarl is still operating as expedition cruise ship Serenissima - there is a nice video of both sisters sailing together @ YouTube. Plans to use Kong Olav as an hotel/dive ship in Thailand never came to fruition - See also:

An excellent starting point for researching MS Lofoten on the internet is the discussion forum at www.captainsvoyage-forum.com as well as the the German webpage hurtigwiki.de which also features a discussion forum on MS Lofoten; www.norwegische-postschiffe.de is another German webpage with many pictures on MS Lofoten; see also Peter Knego's blog "Catching Up With LOFOTEN, Part One" or "Ships in Bergen".
Excellent examples for the plethora of MS Lofoten videos that are available online are the video by Tommi Rotonen @ YouTube as well as the series "50 Jahre MS Lofoten" @ YouTube (Part 1). You might also want to watch this time-lapse of a Raftsundet passage or "Deckhand on MS Lofoten".
The material for the video clips presented on this page was filmed during a trip from Bergen to Hammerfest in December 2014.
